This morning I am doing a 60 km round trip to vote in a Local Government election - 4 year term.

I know only a few of the candidates because they are sitting councilors. They will not be getting my vote. The rest I know nothing about apart from the bit of junk mail I get in my mailbox from those who can afford to print and distribute it. It would make sense for the Electoral Commission to provide a service to all candidates on their website so that they could give an account as to why they should be elected. This would cost next to nothing for all involved.

But of course anybody who expects sensible behavior from the government apparatus is living in a fools paradise.

Even though I consider this election to be a waste of my time I will, without fail, exercise my democratic right. A right which has cost a lot of people a hell of a lot, including death, over a long period of time. It is a pity that a few more of the mindless herd will not wake up to that fact.

As for length of term, 2 years across the board might reduce the amount of damage the Clowns In Power can do, if nothing else.

I don't know what I think. I like four year state terms because it means I don't have to stand outside polling booths every three years. But until we have a choice three years is probably enough. But I think we should severely restrict funding for election campaigns. If it was just publicly funded and all candidates got the same about of money perhaps that would give minors more chance. Unions should not be allowed to fund the Labor party.
